Podcamp Pittsburgh 2

August 2007: Building on the success of previous events, over 230 attendees from Washington, DC, to Kingston, Ontario, took part in PodCamp Pittsburgh 2.  The Art Institute of Pittsburgh played host to an eclectic group of bloggers, podcasters, photographers, programmers, artists, teachers and business owners, all looking to expand their knowledge of social media.

Highlights included:

  • Workshops emphasizing how easy it is to collaborate, create and instantly upload content to the web
  • A panel discussion about the future of media in Pittsburgh, including commentary from City Councilman Bill Peduto and Liberated Syndication ‘s Dave Mansueto
  • Running out of food – always a sign that an event is catching on faster than even the organizers had anticipated!

For many attendees, PCPGH2 is best-remembered as the birthplace of the term “bacn ,” which refers to emails you want… just not right now.  This includes things like Facebook notifications, Twitter alerts, e-bills, etc.  (Hence, “It’s better than spam – it’s bacn!”)
Initially coined as a joke, the term caught on among PCPGH2 attendees and, by the following Monday – less than 48 hours after it had been created – bacn was already being blogged in Japanese, Russian, and by venerable sites like Boing Boing and Web Worker Daily.  Eventually, Google itself would blog a tutorial on how to handle bacn within Gmail .
Bacn’s power as a meme amazed all involved, who would eventually see the term included among several year-end lists of “Top New Words of 2007,” including those of Time and People Magazine.
